Keri Smith’s book “How to be an Explorer of the World” speaks volumes to me and I find comfort and inspiration from her thoughts and observations.
She gives exploration exercises that are bound to make you see the world in ways you’ve never seen before. When you do see the world in different ways, it will feel oddly familiar to you…because you’ll realize the things you noticed were there all along.
pg.91 “Now I will do nothing but listen. I hear all sounds running together, combined, fused, or following, sounds of the city, and sounds out of the city — sounds of the day and night…” – Walt Whitman
The other day, I spontaneously tried to email Keri and to my surprise, she responded :).

“Hi Keri,
My name is Margaret from Toronto, Canada. I stumbled upon your books the other day in the bookstore and I am very inspired by them.
I have been working on a project called ‘Ordinary People – Objects have feelings too’ about noticing and documenting objects on the streets that have some sort of human character or emotion because of the way they are situated in their environments. If you have a moment, please check it out here : http://ordinarypeople.thirtyonekm.com/ and I would love your feedback.
Thank you very much! Have a great day :)
Margaret”

“Hi Margaret,
I like this project a lot. (as I’m sure you could have guessed), i think we see things in a similar way walking down the street.
thanks for sharing it with me.
creatively yours,

It does feel great when you discover something new from something that was always there… especially when it’s a continuous cycle, it keeps life lively and fresh.. the simple things?
It’s such a different take on “discovery” versus.. say traveling around the world for something new, there’s also something cool that can be discovered in your tiny neighborhood! Okay, it might not be as “grand” or shocking, but there’s something warm and home-y about discoveries close to home.
P.S: That’s super cool that she responded and took the time to check out your site :)
Simple things are key! If simple things can make you smile, then you’re able to truly enjoy life.
I also like the idea of discovering things that’s around you. I aspire to practice that everyday. I should start a project where the goal is for everyone to discover something within 1km of their home, and post their findings! :D
