Ordinary People

Inspired by one of Sagmeister’s quotes about how starting a charity is surprisingly easy, so is starting a blog.

Here’s one of my latest projects, Ordinary People.

Moments Like Today

What is ‘Moments Like Today’?

A collaborate project that I’ve been planning and working on for the past little while. The idea is to get people to capture moments of their lives in three parts of the day: morning, afternoon, evening. By capturing a moment and then piecing those moments together, one can gain a better understanding of that person’s life.

The inspiration came about from wondering about what a single young person’s day is like compared to a mother of two children. Another interesting layer forms when you think about how a single young person’s life in Canada is different than say a person in Russia.

That’s the general idea behind it. The logistics is a bit harder to formulate.

How do I actually make this project collaborative and which tools will I use?

This project will be possible in two forms: photos and videos.

Videos:

I’ve created a Vimeo group where people can post their videos to:
http://vimeo.com/groups/momentsliketoday

(It was between YouTube or Vimeo, but I decided to go with Vimeo in the end. Even though YouTube is a lot more wide-spread, I appreciate the ‘human-ness’ of Vimeo and the culture that they are trying to build. I think this project will fit well in there.)

After they post their videos on the group, the moderators of the group can distribute it to the three channels:
http://vimeo.com/channels/morning
http://vimeo.com/channels/afternoon
http://vimeo.com/channels/evening

Essentially the structure is like so:

I’ve also created a Facebook group for Moments Like Today:

Website -> Photos:

With Darryl C’s help, there will be a place where users can upload photos like they upload videos to Vimeo. The website will also act as a place where videos posted on Vimeo can be fed through. There’s no site yet, but it’s going to be here! http://www.momentsliketoday.com :)

Next steps:

- I plan to make videos and take photos to capture my “moments”. People like examples, I will provide them with some :) . Hopefully, that’ll get them thinking about capturing their own. Feel free to join the groups though!
- Finishing the design layout for the Website portion.
- Skinning the Vimeo group/channels

Koop – Beyond the Sun

The mingling of people inside the Four Seasons Centre of the Performing Arts.  Crowds of them leaning against the rails along the window. Some in pairs, sitting on the stairs on several floors. Conversations. Slowly, they fade…going back to their seats after an intermission.

the beginning of Ordinary People

I’ve decided to a start a project called “Ordinary People”, documenting things out there that are inherently static but because of the way they are shaped or positioned in their environment, they evoke emotion or human character.

A sub-series of “Ordinary People” will be Chairs, focusing on chairs on the streets (whether abandoned or just sitting out).  I LOVE ABANDONED CHAIRS :P . Predecessor: Benoît video.

Finding human emotion in ordinary things have been an interest of mine for a while now, so I’m excited that I have finally decided to label it. I haven’t decided how to pool all my findings together yet, but for now they will appear on the usual Facebook albums, but definitely not limited to living there. Any distribution suggestions will be appreciated!

Sometime's it's lonely around here.
